emily//

she walks down the street here/
warm lit little town/
she steps into a coffee shop/
down on main street/
the one i’m playing at/
says she liked that last song/
i ask can i buy her a drink/
we sit down at a corner table/
we’re quiet for a while/
til she looks up and says//

could you play that song again/
the one about the boy and girl/
who never got a chance to say/
exactly how they felt/
time waits for no one/
soon we’ve gone away/
i wish that i’d said something quicker/
but now it’s too late//

says her name is emily/
she comes here every day/
it’s where she met her first love/
but she never told him anything/
and then he had to leave//

i picked up my guitar again/
as i began to play/
i thought of all the opportunities i missed/
cause i didn’t say something/
when i had the chance/
as i played i looked at her/
and she smiled back at me/
then she turned and headed out the door/
for the last time/
we never got to say goodbye/
i think about the words now/
and what they really mean/
i always remember emily/
and hope in vain that she’d come back/
and just once more//
